

The last voter’s registration weekend has officially kicked off the race to the important event of the year the upcoming national elections. Amid bad weather and service delivery in some parts of the country, the registration weekend was a success. The commission has registered 700 000 new voters, KwaZuluNatal has the most registered voters, followed by Gauteng while the Eastern Cape has the least recorded registered voters.
Addressing the media at Imbizo Media Center in Cape Town on Tuesday, the IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo said “most encouragingly 81% of the new registered voters are under 30, which means the youth has heeded the call to register “.The commission acknowledges the 9.2 million eligible voters that are not registered, in a bid to encourage and boost registrations, the IEC has extended registration period.

The commission has launched the higher learning institutions drive and eligible voters can visit a local IEC office during work hours to register. The abroad drive will take place on (1-4) February. Registered voters are also encouraged to check and update their details by doing the following:
- Visit the local IEC office during work hours
- SMS your ID to 32810, SMS are charged at R1.00
- Use the online facility www.elections.org.za/myIEC
This will continue until the voting date is announced by the President.
