THE CANNED CHRISTMAS EXPERIENCE.

Golokile Matjila (18) is the brand behindthe movement Basic Needs Activist.  Currentlyin grade 11 at Khomotso Comprehensive High School in Soshanguve the lad is self-inspiredand motivated to be a good example to his peers. Basically, Needs Activist is amovement that collect donations of canned food and sanitary pads and allocatethem to charity homes they have adopted.

The campaign involves doing outreach in shopping centers in and around Soshanguve. He explained “our goal is to ensure that the less fortunate individuals especially those in orphanages get to experience Christmas as a merry occasion”. The campaign engages the general public to play a role through campaigns that were rolled out at Batho Plaza, Spar Block FF and Soshanguve Plaza. The main event where the beneficiaries and attendees were spoiled to entertainment and a giving spirit was held on the 7 December 2018 at Revival Baptist Church Block BB, Soshanguve.

Golokile and his team intend to make this an annual event. “We want to restore the great African value of social cohesion and collectivism”, said Golokile. People came out in numbers to support this initiative amongst the masses was Mrs Khanyago from the Paul K Foundation,  gospel sensational Mynah Rams and Refilwe who also gave a great performance. The host of the event Sis B Riband made sure the event goes as planned on the day.

Beneficiaries showed gratitude for the selfless gesture shown to them with Thapelo Monoa and Nkagiseng Nkwane representing BNAWG, and a speech from Lebogang Orphanage and a beautiful performance from one of their pupil Edna. “I am humbled by the outcome and support we received, this is a clear example what we can do when society comes together”- Golokile.

Golokile further expressed his gratitudeand acknowledged Mynah Rams, Paul K Foundation and Jehova Orebone ChristianChurch for the gracious donations they made to the course. This is a small steptowards a great journey and Golokile might have become the glue that keeps hiscommunity together.
