DOEK ON FLEEK IS ABOUT WOMEN EMPOWERMENT.

Women empowerment has always been an essential factor amongst society. Thandi Mvata the founder of Doek on Fleek saw a need to establish the Doek on Fleek movement to bring women from all walks of life together to celebrate the important role women play in our society. Doek on Fleek was initially established in 2016 as a movement and changed to a lifestyle picnic in 2018, with the aim to create environments that empower women, where women are encouraged to put their head wraps and come enjoy a day surrounded by other inspirational women.

Through the events women are given opportunities to network, empower each other and have fun at the same time. The movement host events such as Floral Picnics, Market days, Boat Cruise, Stokvel gatherings and Karaoke parties which are attended by a minimum of one thousand women to a maximum of nine thousand. The events take pride in visiting all parts of South Africa and in neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.

Different women come from different backgrounds so women need to come together and put their differences aside to reach a common goal, that’s one of the things that the Doek on Fleek lifestyle is about. During the events women are also given the opportunity to express their entrepreneurial skill by setting up stalls to sell their products and services as well as to promote their businesses. “ We always say to women that we need to fix each other’s crown, as a movement we advocate that we need to be good to each other without feeling like it’s taking a lot from you” said the Founder Thandi”.

Doek on Fleek movement has a slogan that says “I am my sister” which clearly states to women that “You are never alone” know that you have sisters that you can rely on to walk the journey of life with. Their next upcoming event will be held in Durban at Moses Mabhida stadium on the 3Rd of August 2019. Doek on Fleek “Gcwala Nge Doek will be held to celebrate women’s month and 85 000 women will be attending the themed all white and colourful “Doek Nation”.
